Alice

I remember getting a pamphlet for a dragon boat team with a wealth of other information I received from the cancer center. I thought "Wow. That would be so neat." I had just gotten the news that my breast cancer was back (after 11 years free) and it was now in my lungs and bones. Fast forward 5 years. I am now in my 3rd season of dragon boating. I started by trialing a gym practice with the team in the winter. I was told at that time that the average age of the team members was 65. When I did the workout and saw what these women could do, I thought "If these women can do this, then I can too." That was when I joined the team. Being a bit of an introvert, it took me the first 2 seasons to learn to paddle and develop confidence in my skills, and to bond with my teammates. I feel that Hope Afloat has pushed me to keep moving, and has helped me to keep in shape and in the best of health for my condition. All of my teammates have been so supportive. They inspire me to do my best and are good mentors to me and the other members of the team. Our coach, John,  is very knowledgeable, and I know that if I listen to what he is saying, it always works out as planned. He is great in the gym because he helps taper our workouts to fit our individual abilities.  And he is good at judging just how much we are capable of, and will push us to reach our full potential. I truly believe that Hope Afloat has helped to extend my life, as well as given me quality of life. I will be forever grateful for what Hope Afloat has done for me, and am appreciative of the founding members who made this team a reality.
