Marian Vallotton:

My cancer history is a long one.

I’ve had the gift of cancer every decade starting at age 18, now an empty nester and in my 60’s, I’m on my 5th diagnosis and still here! Among the multiple cancers I’ve had, the breast cancer in my 40’s qualified me for Hope Afloat. Cancer is not necessarily a desirable ticket to any club, yet I am grateful for this amazing group of women!

I stumbled on Hope Afloat at an event sponsored by the Cancer Support Community of Greater Philadelphia. I was there to share my new book Unraveling Fate: 21 Mindfulness Practices for Those Touched by Cancer (a book of my experiences, mindfulness, and hope). By happenstance, I shared a table with Hope Afloat volunteers. Kristi was setting up that day offering membership to other cancer patients and survivors. She shared the dragon boat’s story with me, and I was instantly besotted by the team’s mission, the opportunity to row on the river, gym workouts and a rich sense of community.

As a team member, I continue to be inspired by this group of women of all ages. They have empowered me to stretch myself beyond what I thought was possible. Even though I am compromised by my monthly chemo treatments, I am accepted for where I am. On my first day on the river, I felt welcomed, encouraged, and supported. I have nothing but gratitude for this team of strong women!
